On Monday Bloomberg reported that Tesla will start making cars in India. The company has picked the southern state of Karnataka for it's first plant. The main city in that state is Bangalore. Negotiations are still underway however, Tesla have not made an official announcement yet.
When Tesla entered China the Chinese government was very welcoming. Musk had managed to woo the right people. India may be a tougher nut to crack. Just ask Jeff Bezos and the Amazon team who have faced countless regulatory obstacles.
However countries do seem to be more forthcoming when it comes to manufacturing. Tesla puts the money in, hires loads of Indians and they get to export the cars. India also has thousands of highly educated engineers itching for meaningful work.
Will South Africa be next? Elon Musk does not mix well with interfering governments. We saw that when he staged a public revolt to Coronavirus lockdowns in the US. Unfortunately our government cannot help themselves but interfere. So I won't hold my breath.
